Rep. Colin Allred, a Democrat and former NFL linebacker, is reportedly planning to announce his candidacy for U.S. Senate challenging incumbent Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. Allred, who was first elected to Congress in 2018, is a proven fundraiser with several bipartisan accomplishments that boost his credentials as a moderate. Any Democrat running statewide in Texas is an underdog by default, but Allred's candidacy would pit a rising star in the Democratic Party who previously upset a long-term GOP incumbent against Cruz, a stalwart conservative and runner-up to the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.
