Debt Ceiling Deal Divides Democrats and Republicans Alike

President Biden should challenge the constitutionality of the debt ceiling in court now that a deal has been reached to avert a default. The debt ceiling is likely unconstitutional and absurd, as it requires the Treasury to both borrow and not borrow more money. If the debt ceiling is struck down, the U.S. can address the national debt through the budget process by cutting spending, raising taxes, or both. The debt ceiling is simply fiscal responsibility theater, distracting from the true drivers of the debt.
