President Biden postponed a meeting with congressional leaders on Friday to discuss the debt ceiling as staffers continue to make progress on negotiations. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's office said that he, Biden, and other leaders agreed that their staffs should continue to meet. Negotiators could potentially find common ground around spending cuts, including speeding up permitting of energy projects, adding stricter work requirements for safety net programs, clawing back unspent COVID-19 relief funds, and setting spending caps for federal programs. Some are floating the idea of a short-term extension of the debt limit, but McCarthy has opposed that repeatedly.
