The Department of Justice has joined a lawsuit against Tennessee over a new law banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors, which is set to take effect on July 1. The lawsuit alleges that the law is unconstitutional and violates the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause. Proponents of the law argue that minors are not capable of making decisions about gender-affirming care, while medical experts say those decisions are made with parents and healthcare providers. Tennessee's S.B. 1 is one of at least 36 anti-trans bills that have passed in state legislatures in 2021.
