GOP's Top Pick Declines Wisconsin Senate Run

Rep. Mike Gallagher has declined to run for the Wisconsin Senate race, dealing a blow to the Republican Party's efforts to block Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin from a third term. Gallagher, who leads the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, had been seen as the strongest prospective challenger by top Senate GOP strategists. However, his public break with former President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and his refusal to support Trump in 2024 could have made him vulnerable in a primary. Other prospective candidates include Eric Hovde, Scott Mayer, Tom Tiffany, and David Clarke.
