Ilhan Omar criticizes US for inaction after George Floyd's death.

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has criticised the US for failing to curb police violence against Black Americans, saying that brutality has escalated since George Floyd’s murder. Omar is proposing a House resolution condemning police brutality worldwide, calling for reallocating funding in the US toward mental health programs, counseling and violence prevention; ending the use of militarized equipment and police tactics in the US and abroad; and prohibiting the sales of arms, ammunition and “less-lethal” equipment to countries with documented human rights violations. The UN experts, part of a human rights panel formed after Floyd’s murder, are visiting US cities to investigate police killings and racism in the US criminal legal system.
