Japan's Recent Changes to Sexual and LGBT Laws

Japan has passed a bill to promote understanding of the LGBT community, but critics say it provides no human rights guarantees and may encourage some forms of discrimination. The bill was changed from "discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity should not be tolerated" to "there should be no unfair discrimination". Japan is the only G7 nation with no legal protection for same-sex unions, and pressure from other G7 nations, especially the US, has been mounting for Japan to allow same-sex marriage.
