Allies of Senator Joe Manchin believe that the influential West Virginia Democrat may retire from the Senate to become the president of his alma mater, West Virginia University. The university is currently facing a budget shortfall and potential cuts to its world languages programs. While Manchin's plans for 2024 remain uncertain, he could also run for reelection to the Senate or as an independent under a No Labels presidential ticket. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has urged Manchin to run for reelection, as he is seen as the party's best chance of holding the seat in the deep red state. Democrats, however, want him to drop any presidential bid to avoid potential damage to President Joe Biden's reelection chances.
