Kansas Lawmakers Face Criticism for Mishandling Anti-Trans Legislation

An attorney representing the Kansas Department of Revenue argued that lawmakers in the state botched the drafting of a new law aimed at preventing transgender individuals from changing the sex listed on their driver's licenses. The attorney made this argument in a court filing seeking to lift an order that currently bars such changes due to a lawsuit filed by Republican state Attorney General Kris Kobach. Five transgender Kansas residents are also seeking to have the order revoked, claiming that their constitutional rights are being violated. The new law, which took effect on July 1, would make Kansas one of the few states that do not allow gender marker changes on driver's licenses.
