Maher: Immigrants Must Assimilate and Embrace Liberal Values
TL;DR
Bill Maher argued on Real Time that immigrants should be welcomed but must assimilate into American culture and uphold core liberal values such as gay rights, women's equality, and free speech, calling these principles non-negotiable rather than ‘White values.’ A Penn State professor pushed back, saying assimilation has historically been the expectation in the U.S., not simply a melting-pot concept, highlighting tension over how immigration and cultural norms are framed in politics.
