McKinney edges Thanedar in Detroit-area Dem primary, signaling a return of Black representation in Congress
TL;DR
Donavan McKinney narrowly defeated incumbent Shri Thanedar in Michigan’s 13th District Democratic primary, 51.9% to 48.1%, a win that could restore Detroit-based Black representation in Congress and reflect progressive momentum. McKinney drew support from local institutions and national progressives, while Thanedar, though well-funded and well-known, lost ground in a district that remains safely Democratic in November.
