Nebraska Legislature Combines Transgender and Abortion Bills for Final Vote

Nebraska lawmakers have combined a ban on gender-affirming care for transgender minors with a less restrictive version of an abortion ban that failed last month. The abortion measure would ban the procedure at 12 weeks gestation, with exceptions for rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother. The transgender bill would ban gender-reassignment surgery for anyone 18 and younger, and it would give the state’s chief medical officer authority over hormone treatments for transgender minors. The combined bill is expected to pass on Friday and be signed by the Republican governor.
