North Carolina Democrat Withdraws from Reelection Due to GOP-Favored Redistricting

Democratic Representative Kathy Manning of North Carolina has announced that she will not seek reelection in 2024 due to the "egregiously gerrymandered" congressional maps in the state. Manning stated that the new maps make the race non-competitive and she cannot ask people to invest in a rigged campaign. However, she left the possibility open for future service if lawsuits are successful in forcing the General Assembly to draw fair districts. The new maps, approved by the GOP-led state Legislature, are expected to favor Republicans in at least 10 of the districts. Other Democratic representatives, including Jeff Jackson and Wiley Nickel, have also decided against running for reelection due to the new maps.
