A county commissioner in Oklahoma resigned amid backlash after a local newspaper reported that he and other officials talked about lynching Black people and threatened to assassinate two reporters in a conversation secretly recorded by one of those journalists. The governor called on him and three other officials to step down. The sheriff's office said the audio was "illegally obtained" and had not been authenticated. The Oklahoma Sheriffs' Association suspended three officials. The reporter left his recorder on after the meeting, hoping to get evidence that officials were holding a secret meeting in violation of state law.
