The Chaotic Path to DeSantis's Presidential Campaign
TL;DR
Despite being an ideal proving ground for a White House bid, Florida has never produced a president nor had one born within its borders. The state's reputation as a gun-shaped anti-paradise of grifters, rejects, and assorted weirdos has lingered, making it difficult for politicians to gain respect. Ron DeSantis, the current governor of Florida, is running against this reputation as he considers a presidential bid in 2024. However, former President Trump's connection to the state is tenuous, and he has criticized Florida's Covid response and education and crime statistics.
