The Debate Over Congestion Pricing in New York and New Jersey

New Jersey's senators, Robert Menendez and Cory Booker, have introduced legislation and expressed "serious concerns" to the transportation secretary about New York City's plan to charge drivers on Manhattan's busiest streets, arguing that the tolls would unfairly burden suburbanites who must travel into the city for work. The tolling program, which would be the first of its kind in the nation, is intended to reduce traffic by charging drivers to enter the busiest parts of Manhattan. The Federal Highway Administration is expected to approve the city's congestion pricing plan soon.
