Trump backs challenger to unseat Cassidy in Louisiana GOP primary
TL;DR
President Trump endorsed U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow to defeat incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy in Louisiana's Republican Senate primary, part of a broader effort to purge party members Trump deems disloyal after Cassidy voted to convict him in the Jan. 6 impeachment. Cassidy faces additional opposition from state Treasurer John Fleming; a runoff will occur June 27 if no candidate reaches 50%. The race, shaped by Trump’s influence, DEI attack ads, and redistricting-driven scheduling changes, is expected to hinge on turnout and loyalties within a deeply Republican state.
