UN Panel Concludes on Racism in Policing After Visiting Minneapolis and Other Cities

A United Nations panel of independent experts visited Minneapolis and five other cities to investigate systemic racism, including in law enforcement and the criminal justice system, and develop steps to address it. The panel presented preliminary findings, detailing concerns about the use of force in schools, the “generalized practice” of solitary confinement, systemic racism within police agencies, and human rights violations during anti-racism protests nationwide. The Mechanism recommended Congress pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act and encouraged the establishment of a commission to study reparations. The full report will be presented to the Human Rights Council this fall.
