Washington State Secures 3-Year Supply of Abortion Pills Amid Legal Uncertainty

Washington Governor Jay Inslee has purchased a three-year supply of mifepristone, one of two drugs used for medication abortions, in anticipation of a potential ban. The state acquired the doses for $1.27 million through the Department of Corrections, which has a pharmacy license. The University of Washington has also purchased 10,000 doses. Lawmakers are introducing a bill to authorize state officials to distribute the medication to providers and health care facilities. The move comes as Washington becomes a hub for reproductive rights after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned federal abortion protections granted in the 1973 decision known as Roe v. Wade.
