Tech Giants Unite to Combat Deceptive AI in Elections

Major tech companies, including Meta, Google, Microsoft, and others, have signed an accord to adopt "reasonable precautions" to prevent AI-generated deepfakes from disrupting democratic elections. The pact outlines methods to detect and label deceptive AI content on their platforms, but does not commit to banning or removing deepfakes. While the accord is largely symbolic and voluntary, it aims to address the increasingly realistic AI-generated images, audio, and video that could deceive voters. The agreement comes as more than 50 countries are due to hold national elections in 2024, and it follows instances of AI-generated election interference in various countries.
