Austin Approves Phase One of Light Rail System Plan.

Austin city leaders have approved the final plan for the city's light-rail system, which includes a nearly 10-mile on-street rail line through downtown Austin with 15 stations along the route. The project is estimated to cost $5 billion, partly funded through federal grants, and is expected to provide an alternate transportation option for residents and visitors. The plan was scaled back from an initial design that would have nearly doubled the price of the project. The project is not expected to be completed for several more years.
