Foot soreness delays Mayer’s hoped-for Giants debut against his former team

Marcelo Mayer’s anticipated debut for the Giants against the Red Sox is on hold due to soreness in his right foot. An MRI/CT showed a bruise, so he will rest this weekend in San Francisco and be reevaluated next week after his rehab assignment was halted. Mayer, who had been 6-for-17 in four rehab games and was recovering from a forearm stress reaction, could move to second base once cleared and may not need additional minor-league time if cleared soon.
