TL;DR

The Boston Red Sox surprised fans by optioning left-handed pitcher Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester just days before their Opening Day game in Seattle, despite manager Alex Cora expressing his expectation for Bernardino to contribute at the big league level over the season. This move leaves Joely Rodríguez as the only left-handed option in the bullpen to start the campaign, despite Bernardino's valuable relief performance last season.
