Royals Reinstat Pasquantino and Garcia, DFA Marte, Add Thomas

Key points

• Pasquantino and Garcia return to the active roster, displacing Josh Rojas and Jose Cuas.
• Starling Marte is designated for assignment after an underwhelming 2026 season.
• Connor Thomas is recalled from Triple-A Omaha to serve as the only left-handed reliever.
• Jac Caglianone moves from first base to right field to accommodate Pasquantino's return.

Background

The Royals have struggled with outfield consistency and bullpen depth this season. Pasquantino and Garcia have faced injury setbacks, with Pasquantino battling hand issues and Garcia dealing with a muscle strain. The team previously explored veteran options like Marte to bolster the outfield, but performance did not meet expectations.

How outlets are covering it

Royals Review emphasizes the lineup changes and the return of key players, noting the impact on Jac Caglianone's role. MLB Trade Rumors focuses on Marte's underperformance and the financial implications of his release, highlighting that his bonuses will not transfer to a new club. Both sources agree on the roster moves but differ in emphasis, with Royals Review focusing on player performance and MLB Trade Rumors on contract details.

Why it matters

These moves signal the Royals' attempt to stabilize their lineup and bullpen as they navigate a challenging season. The return of Pasquantino and Garcia could improve offensive output, while the addition of Thomas addresses a gap in left-handed relief pitching. The DFA of Marte reflects the team's willingness to cut underperforming veterans.

What to watch

The Royals will monitor Pasquantino and Garcia's health and performance, while also evaluating Thomas' effectiveness in the bullpen. Marte's future will depend on whether he is claimed off waivers or becomes a free agent. The team may also explore further roster adjustments to optimize their lineup and pitching staff.
