Child's Death at Day Care Exposes Fentanyl Stash, Sparks Federal Charges

A kilogram of fentanyl was found stored on children's play mats at a New York City day care where a 1-year-old boy died from exposure to the drug. Three other children were hospitalized and treated with Narcan. Day care operator Grei Mendez and tenant Carlisto Acevedo Brito are facing federal charges of narcotics possession with intent to distribute resulting in death and conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death. The defendants allegedly ran a drug operation from the day care center. Mendez and Brito were initially arrested on state charges and are now in federal custody. Authorities are still searching for a co-conspirator.
