South Carolina state lawmakers have passed a bill criminalizing sextortion, a crime that led to the suicide of 17-year-old Gavin Guffey. The bill, named "Gavin's Law," will impose up to five years in prison for scammers who extort minors or at-risk adults. Sextortion cases have gone up in the past year, with nearly half of the 7,000 reports related to the online sextortion of minors resulting in victims, a majority of them boys. The FBI warns that the cases are contributing to an alarming number of suicides nationwide.
