Mother of 6-Year-Old Shooter Receives 2-Year Prison Sentence for Neglect

The mother of a 6-year-old boy who shot and critically injured his first-grade teacher in Virginia has been sentenced to two years in prison for child neglect. The boy had taken his mother's gun from her purse and shot his teacher in front of the class. The mother's sentence is longer than recommended by state guidelines and comes in addition to a previous federal sentence for using marijuana while owning a firearm. The boy is now being cared for by his great-grandfather. The teacher, who suffered serious injuries, has filed a $40 million lawsuit against the school district.
