Tragic Fentanyl Overdose at Bronx Day Care: Two Charged

The owner of a Bronx day care center, Grei Mendez, and her cousin, Carlisto Acevedo Brito, have been charged with federal offenses after a 1-year-old boy died and three other children fell ill from apparent opioid exposure. According to a complaint, large quantities of fentanyl, including a kilogram stored on top of children's playmats, were found in the day care space. The complaint also revealed the presence of drug packaging devices and suspicious behavior by Mendez's husband. Mendez made multiple calls before contacting 911, and surveillance footage showed her husband leaving the day care with weighted shopping bags through the back alley. Mendez deleted thousands of messages from an encrypted messaging app, and Brito's electronic devices indicated his involvement in narcotics trafficking. Authorities are still searching for Mendez's husband as they investigate the source of the drugs.
