Nonbinary Performers Make History at Tony Awards
TL;DR
Alex Newell made history at the 2023 Tony Awards as the first performer who identifies as nonbinary to win a Tony for best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical for their performance in Broadway's original musical Shucked. Newell thanked their mom, the cast and crew of Shucked, and encouraged others to believe in themselves. The Tony Awards separate acting categories into male and female, but Newell chose to submit in the best performance by a featured actor in a musical category, reflecting their identification with the term "actor."
