The legal battle saw De Niro accused of being an abusive boss who subjected his assistant to sexually inappropriate behavior. Although De Niro himself was not found liable, Canal Productions was held responsible. The lawsuit began when Canal sued the assistant for allegedly stealing frequent flier miles and misusing expense privileges. In response, the assistant filed her own $12 million suit, claiming mistreatment and sexual abuse. De Niro denied the allegations but admitted to calling her a "spoiled brat" and asking her to scratch his back. The case also involved allegations of bullying by De Niro's girlfriend.
