Berkshire’s Alphabet Bet: Abel outlines Berkshire’s $37B AI-focused stake

Berkshire Hathaway has built a roughly $36.6 billion stake in Alphabet (Google’s parent), about 106 million shares, making it Berkshire’s third-largest equity position. The investment began about 15 months ago via a $10 billion private placement at a 6.5% discount, with Berkshire adding about $17 billion more in Q2 2026. CEO Greg Abel said Berkshire’s visibility into how its portfolio uses AI influenced the decision, and Buffett initiated the investment and remains closely involved, saying, “I started it, and he’s the decider.” Alphabet’s AI expansion, including an $85 billion equity raise, reinforces Berkshire’s confidence in Alphabet’s AI trajectory and Google’s role in the space.
