CDC Warns of Widespread Salmonella Outbreak from Pet Turtles

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is investigating a salmonella outbreak across 11 states that has sickened at least 26 people and hospitalized 9. The outbreak has been linked to contact with small turtles, which are banned from sale due to their high likelihood of carrying and spreading illness. Despite the ban, these turtles are still being sold illegally. Children under the age of 5 are particularly susceptible to contracting illnesses from turtles. The CDC advises proper hand hygiene and discourages kissing or snuggling turtles, eating or drinking around them, or allowing them in areas where food is present. Symptoms of salmonella disease include diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and stomach cramps.
