China's Respiratory Illness Outbreak Under WHO Scrutiny

Chinese authorities have reported no "unusual or novel pathogens" after the World Health Organization (WHO) requested data on a spike in respiratory illness cases in the country. Despite the assurance, health care facilities in northern China are under pressure due to a surge in respiratory infections, including influenza and clusters of pneumonia among children. The WHO attributes the surge to the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions and advises China to reinforce measures such as vaccines and mask-wearing. The WHO does not recommend specific measures for travelers to China and advises against travel or trade restrictions. China's State Council expects influenza cases to peak this winter and spring, while pneumonia infections may persist further into the future. The WHO will continue to monitor the outbreak and work with international partners.
