China's "Walking Pneumonia" Outbreak: WHO Demands Transparency

China is currently facing a major outbreak of mycoplasma infections, particularly affecting children, leading to overcrowded hospitals and extended waiting times for medical attention. The surge in cases is attributed to an "immunity gap" in children due to strict lockdown measures implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in lower immunity and higher susceptibility to infection. Antibiotic resistance is also a concern, as overuse and misuse of antibiotics in China have contributed to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of mycoplasma pneumonia. The true extent of the outbreak may be underestimated due to underreporting and underdiagnosis. The World Health Organization advises following normal respiratory illness prevention measures, including vaccination and isolation if symptoms emerge.
