COVID Booster Vaccine: Available Sooner Than Expected

U.S. health officials have announced that an updated COVID vaccine is likely to be available in mid-September, with a recommendation for everyone to receive a booster shot. Currently, only about 17 percent of Americans have received a booster. Vaccination remains crucial as immunity wanes and the virus continues to evolve. The CDC reports that 97 percent of individuals aged 16 and over in the U.S. have protective immunity from COVID-19 through vaccination or prior infection. While hospitalizations have increased recently, they are still significantly lower than previous years. Older individuals and those who are immunocompromised may need multiple vaccines, similar to current recommendations. Annual flu shots and RSV shots for vulnerable populations will also be recommended.
