Fatal Brain-Eating Amoeba Infection Claims Texas Swimmer's Life

A Texas resident has died after contracting an infection caused by a brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri, after swimming in Lake Lyndon B. Johnson. The amoeba enters the body through the nose and travels to the brain, causing a brain infection that is almost always fatal. This year, there have been several deaths associated with Naegleria fowleri in different states. Health officials advise swimmers to limit water going up their nose and to avoid jumping or diving into warm fresh water to reduce the risk of infection.
