Leprosy Resurgence in Florida Raises Concerns

Multiple cases of leprosy have been found in Florida with no clear source of infection, leading scientists to believe that leprosy may now be endemic in the southeastern United States. Central Florida accounts for the majority of cases reported in the state. Although the number of infections is still low nationally, researchers are trying to trace the origin of these cases. Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is caused by a slow-growing bacteria and can be treated with antibiotics.
