Leprosy Resurgence in Florida Raises Concerns

Cases of leprosy, a rare disease usually associated with biblical times, are surging in Florida, according to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC warns that leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is on the rise overall, with incidences more than doubling in southeastern America over the past decade. Central Florida has become a particular hotspot, accounting for 81% of cases in the state and nearly one-fifth of all reported cases in the country. The cases in Florida are unusual as they do not appear to be linked to traditional risk factors such as exposure to leprosy-carrying armadillos or travel to countries where the disease is prevalent. The CDC suggests that environmental reservoirs may be a potential source of transmission and calls for further investigation into the rise of cases in Florida.
