Rapid Spread of Deadly Fungus Raises Global Health Concerns

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring an emerging fungus called Candida auris (C. auris) that poses a serious global health threat. Healthcare facilities in 29 states, including Florida, have reported severe illness or death in hospitalized patients caused by this yeast. C. auris often does not respond to commonly used antifungal drugs, making it difficult to treat. Patients with lines and tubes in their bodies, such as those in nursing homes, are at the highest risk. The fungus is spread in healthcare settings through contact with contaminated surfaces or person-to-person contact. The CDC is urging healthcare facilities to be vigilant and is conducting further research on the fungus.
