Respiratory Illness Surge in China Raises Concerns for World Health Organization

Hospitals in Beijing and northern China are facing a surge of children with respiratory illnesses, overwhelming their capacity and resulting in long wait times. Health officials attribute the increase to typical seasonal illnesses such as influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as well as mycoplasma pneumonia. The World Health Organization (WHO) has asked China for more information on the rise in respiratory illnesses and clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children, but Chinese authorities have stated that there is no evidence of any unusual or novel pathogens. Experts believe that the increase in cases is not unexpected given the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions and the onset of winter.
