Children and adolescents who survive gun injuries experience significant increases in pain, psychiatric disorders, and substance use disorders compared to their peers, according to a study published in Health Affairs. The research, which analyzed 15 years of claims data, found that survivors of firearm injuries experienced a 117% increase in pain disorders, a 68% increase in psychiatric disorders, and a 144% increase in substance use disorders. The mental health of family members was also affected, with parents experiencing a 30-31% increase in psychiatric disorders.
