Texas officials took down a Venezuelan flag that was planted in the middle of the Rio Grande at the US-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, where an estimated 100,000 migrants entered over the past week. Most of the asylum seekers are Venezuelans fleeing the economic and social collapse under Nicolas Maduro's regime. The Mexican and American governments, along with the United Nations, are considering a temporary pre-screening program for about 40,000 asylum seekers from Haiti, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba. The number of migrants crossing the US-Mexico border has been increasing, with approximately 232,972 migrants crossing in August alone. The surge of asylum seekers has created chaos in cities like New York, where Mayor Eric Adams estimates the issue will cost the city $12 billion in three years.
