Hong Kong's Prominent Publisher Jimmy Lai Faces Landmark National Security Trial

Lai, the founder of the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, is charged with colluding with foreign forces and publishing seditious materials. The trial is seen as a test for press freedom and judicial independence in Hong Kong, which has experienced a significant erosion of civil liberties and political opposition in recent years. Lai's trial is the first in Hong Kong on charges of collusion with foreign forces, and it also targets three companies related to Apple Daily. Several former Apple Daily executives, who pleaded guilty to collusion charges, are expected to testify as witnesses for the prosecution. The trial is expected to last about 80 days.
