TL;DR

John Thune has been elected as the new Senate Republican leader, succeeding Mitch McConnell. Thune, a long-serving senator from South Dakota, won a secret ballot against Florida Senator Rick Scott and Texas Senator John Cornyn. Thune's election is seen as a move towards Senate Republicans reasserting their independence, despite his complex relationship with Donald Trump. Thune will lead the Republican majority in the Senate, which recently flipped control with a 53-47 majority.
