"Louisiana's Congressional Map Must Be Redrawn by Mid-January, Federal Appeals Court Rules"

The Louisiana state legislature has been given until mid-January to create a new congressional map after a federal court ruled that the current map unfairly disenfranchises Black voters. If the legislature fails to meet the deadline, a lower district court will develop a plan for the 2024 elections. The decision on whether to call a special session to redraw the boundaries lies with the outgoing Democratic governor or his Republican successor, who will be inaugurated on January 8. Currently, Black voters represent one-third of Louisiana's population but only have a majority in one out of six congressional districts. The lower court had previously ordered a new map to be drawn, including a second district with a majority of Black voters.
