Trump touts permanent U.S. security role in Greenland under Denmark pact

President Donald Trump announced a deal with Denmark and Greenland that he said gives the United States permanent control over Greenland’s security, including basing and overflight rights, and screens investments to block adversaries such as Russia and China. The agreement, described by officials as having no cost to the U.S. and with an “Infinite Life” character, would bar non-NATO bases or troops and would enable a large U.S. military presence in Greenland. Danish and Greenlandic leaders said the pact strengthens Arctic security and NATO ties while recognizing Greenland’s sovereignty, with signing expected next week in New York. Greenlanders have long opposed annexation, and the arrangement is said to remain in effect even if Greenland becomes independent.
