EU Launches Investigation into Disinformation Surge Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

The European Commission has launched a formal investigation into Elon Musk's social media platform, X, requesting information on its provisions to tackle illegal content, disinformation, and abusive material in relation to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The investigation is part of the European Union's Digital Services Act (DSA), aimed at protecting freedom of expression and democracy. X CEO Linda Yaccarino responded, stating that the platform had taken action on thousands of pieces of content. European Commissioner Thierry Breton has also sent warning letters to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew. The Commission has requested information from X by October 18, 2023, and will assess next steps based on the replies.
