European Union negotiators have reached a tentative political agreement on the world's first comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) rules, known as the Artificial Intelligence Act. The deal includes oversight of generative AI services like ChatGPT and regulations on police use of facial recognition surveillance. The EU took an early lead in AI regulation and the agreement could set an example for other governments. However, critics argue that important technical details are still missing and that the agreement was rushed.
