Europe's Landmark AI Act: Comprehensive Rules for Artificial Intelligence

European Union negotiators have reached a deal on the world's first comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) rules, known as the Artificial Intelligence Act. The agreement includes regulations on generative AI and police use of face recognition surveillance. While civil society groups have expressed concerns about the deal not going far enough to protect people from harm caused by AI systems, the EU has become the first continent to establish clear rules for the use of AI. The European Parliament still needs to vote on the act, but with the deal in place, it is expected to pass. The law would not take full effect until 2025 and could impose significant financial penalties for violations.
