Meta's Threads: The Twitter Challenger

Meta has officially launched Threads, a text-based app designed to challenge Twitter. Threads is a separate space for real-time updates and public conversations, initially relying on users' Instagram credentials but eventually becoming compatible with decentralized services like Mastodon. The app supports text posts up to 500 characters, as well as photos and videos up to five minutes. Meta plans to make Threads compatible with ActivityPub, allowing users from Mastodon and other services to follow and interact with public-facing posts on Threads. The company aims to create a diverse and interconnected network of compatible apps. However, it remains to be seen if Threads can become a viable alternative to Twitter, given the platform's massive user base.
